Critters In Your Roofing System

Squirrels teeth are always growing, and they need to work them down. Squirrels in the wild chew on shed antlers, bones and wood. Today squirrels, rats and raccoons have your home as a possible way to keep their teeth sharp. In the many roofs I’ve repaired or installed new, I have found squirrels that have destroyed plastic vent pipes, eaten lead flashings on tile roofs, and eaten their way through wood shingles and shake roofs. Sometimes they only chew a little bit, but other times they set up household and cause a great deal of damage.

How Do They Get Into Your Roof Area?
They can enter at eve vents and roofing flashings, especially tile flashing that are not double flashed. It is common for squirrels and rats to get under tile roofs, eat through the plywood, and use the roofing paper for nesting materials. Raccoons often go through wood roofs especially if there is leaf debris breeding grubs. They also like to move inside for warmth and safety.

The Damage They Do
The bad new is that they can do a great deal of damage. They eat the wiring, carry fleas, and are not house broken. In addition, the hole they make may lead to a major leak and water damage. Their waste is a health issue, and if trapped inside the attic or house, they can do great damage trying to chew or claw their way out. I can tell you stories…..

What Should You Do?
Prevention is the most cost effective. Here are a few sensible precautions you should take:

  • Have your roof and gutters cleaned off at least once a year and two or more times if you have lots of trees. Debris covered roofs & gutters attract bugs and are a fire hazard.
  • Have the roof checked at least every other year by a licensed roofing contractor, more often if you have had issues. We know what to look for and how to repair it when found. Handymen (women) are not licensed or insured to do roof repairs and being on roofs is very dangerous. You could be liable should an uninsured or unlicensed contractor is hurt on the job.
  • If you hear noise in your attic, call a pest control company at once to get whatever is in your attic out of it. We can recommend trusted, local companies if needed.
  • If something dies or smells funny, give us a call and we can refer a company that is certified to remove dead animals and their mess. They also sanitize the area as needed.
  • A concentration of flies and smell is usually a sign of a dead critter.
  • When you replace your roof, we can design a system that discourages these pests.
  • If you want to repair your roof, or we can do things now to help you extend the life of your existing roof.

Please CALL US NOW, before it’s too late. We, and our network of licensed contractors, can help you make sure your roof is as critter-proofed as it can be.
